Continuing the 'birthday' theme, we thought the children would enjoy this next 'Kipper' story. Kipper wants to choose a pet for Pig's birthday present - he thinks that the rabbit is too sleepy, the mouse is too shy and the stick insect is boring! But the hamster? Kipper thinks that the hamster is perfect! Ollie G told us "The hamster did a roly poly, he did a roly poly again!" Sam said "Kipper got to wrap up his hamster's cage because he was giving him to Pig" Kipper had so much fun playing with Roly Poly that he almost forgot about Pig's party. Ollie told us "Kipper runned to the Pig's house because he had to get there just in time" Kipper fed Roly with pieces of left-over party cake, then took a big bite for himself. Arabella said "He did eat the cake and he was very hungry!" As Pig had already been given a rabbit, a mouse, two guinea pigs and a stick insect, he had an idea about what to do with Roly the hamster - Sam predicted "That Kipper can look after it, even if it's Pig's!" Sam was right, and Kipper thought this was a great idea - so did we! Have you got any pets at home? We would love to hear about them - post us a comment and let us know! We enjoyed reading 'Kipper's Birthday' so much last week that we thought we could have a party for him at Nursery too! After we had talked about 'what makes a good party' and had written a menu, we got on with the food preparations! Harriet told us "We need an apron so we don't get food down our clothes. And we wash our hands so they're nice and clean". We all helped to make some currant buns - we knew that Kipper would like those! George said "We need flour and sugar and eggs - they're ingredients" He predicted that after they had been in the oven "They will be cooked and brown and crunchy". Everyone was very careful when they used the knife to make their healthy banana sandwich! Kipper was very excited as he watched all the preparations - and he thought the food tasted delicious! Have you got a favourite filling that you like to have in your sandwich? Post us a comment and let us know! As we have been having so much fun celebrating Chinese New Year, we thought it would be a good idea to find out what Kipper did to celebrate his birthday . . . This was another great book written by Mick Inkpen! As we were reading the story, I paused and asked the children what Kipper would need to do with his cake that he was making - Maddie told us "He will have to put it in the oven to bake and you have to put it in the fridge to get cold - and you can eat it when you go to the party!" After we had finished the story, Zachary told us "I liked the cake - I liked the candles!" and Reuben said "Kipper decorated his house - he did it super fast! With balloons and decorations" How did you celebrate your last birthday? Post us a comment and let us know!
This week we have been having lots of fun celebrating Chinese New Year!
We watched the video clips on 'Let's Celebrate' showing how Abbi and her family prepare for and celebrate their Chinese New Year, as well as watching the puppet show telling the story of the animals in the Chinese zodiac - this year is the year of the Pig! Click below to find out more . . . To help with our celebrations, the children came to Nursery dressed for the occasion! We had lots of fun trying to use chopsticks to eat our Chinese food! Our number activities this week were based around the coins in our Lucky Red Envelopes and we had a try at some Chinese writing for our good luck messages, then created our own Chinese Willow Pattern plates! Have you been celebrating Chinese New Year too? Post us a comment and let us know what you did - we would love to hear from you! This week we have been having lots of fun playing the 'Which shape is it?' game! Afterwards the children selected from a range of 'shape toy' pictures to either match the shapes on top, or recreate them by copying the picture alongside . . . Several of the children were able to name the shapes that they had used, and some were able to describe them too! Anabella told us "A triangle's got one, two, three corners and one, two, three sides" She also said "Square's got one, two, three, four - four sides and one, two, three, four - four corners!" Reuben picked up a rectangle - "It's got two big sides and two short sides . . . or we can say two long sides!" Looking at a hexagon he said "It's got six sides and six corners" Reuben then picked up a circle - "It's got one edge that goes all the way round!" Perhaps you could have a go at creating some 'shape toys' - which shapes would you use? |
