Once all the snow had melted, we played some of our favourite games outside . . . As well as being lots of fun, we were also developing our counting and number recognition skills! Which is your favourite one to play?
Of course, you can play all of these games indoors too!

As well as all the excitement of the snow this week, the children have also been having fun designing and making their own wooden spoon puppet . . . After thinking about their designs, the children set about making their puppets, here is a small selection of some of their creations . . . Then of course, we needed to create our own puppet theatre!
We thought this would be the ideal choice for our next Mick Inkpen book . . . After we had shared this great story, Poppy told us:
"I liked when Tiger went rolling down the hill" (Why did you like that part of the story in particular?) "Because he had woolly clothes" (And what happened to them?) "The snow stuck to it" (So what did Tiger turn into?) "A snowball!" This seemed to be everyone's favourite part of the story! The children were all very excited when they arrived at Nursery on Monday! We talked about the snow and shared some of their experiences before wrapping up nice and warm to go outside and explore . . . During their child initiated session, some of the children decided to paint snowmen! This is the wonderful one that Ida painted: We hope that you had fun in the snow too! Having reflected on the lovely shape toy designs as well as the trains etc. that the children had been making with our construction toys, we decided that we could create our own 'toy factory' in the courtyard for a new role play area!
Now we are all looking forward to completing and using our new 'toy factory' next week! We have been having lots of fun exploring the shapes to create 'shape toys' this week. Some of the children matched shapes on top of pre-prepared 'toys' and others had a go at creating their own - we had some great robots in particular! After completing their toy, we talked about which shapes they had used and compared how many sides and corners each one had. This was followed by the children using corresponding shapes to print a picture of their toy creation . . . Perhaps you could create your own shape toy!
What toy would you make and which shapes would you use? This week we have been sharing another book written by Mick Inkpen. In this story, Kipper looks after Pig's little cousin Arnold and although Kipper tries to tempt him with a selection of toys to play with, it is actually the empty toybox that Arnold wants so Kipper makes it into a little house for him! Afterwards Evie told us "Arnold sucked his thumb" (What else can you tell us about the story?) "Kipper made a house for Arnold" (What did he use to make the house?) "He used the toybox" (How did he make it into a house?) "With scissors" (Did he use anything else?) "And sellotape".
We have been enjoying making some of our own toys too this week! Last week we introduced our new Darwin focus - Bouncebackability - building the capacity to bounce back from a setback, resilience overcoming failure. As part of our activities we had looked at a selection of apparatus and discussed what the children could do with them already, and how they could challenge themselves to keep practising to be able to complete a physical goal such as being able to kick the ball further, or throw it and catch it for an increased number of times without dropping it etc. This week the children have been having a go at their challenges . . . Which apparatus would you have chosen to use?
What goal would you have challenged yourself to try and achieve? Have and go and see how you get on! Having talked about the toys that Kipper had, we looked in more detail at some of the different ones we have Nursery and explored some of their similarities and differences, focussing on what they were made from, their colour, shape, size and texture; whether or not they moved and if so, how we make them work - i.e. by pressing buttons, sliding a switch, or turning a dial etc. Following on from meeting Kipper and his friends last week, we have shared our first Mick Inkpen book together. This lovely story provided us with lots of opportunities for one to one correspondence when counting toys into and out of the toybox, working out how many more or less there were each time and imagining what would happen if some of our toys came to life!
Lily told us "A mouse was in there . . . inside the sock, the mama and the dadda mouse were in there with the babies. They moved in the sock and he (Kipper) hid behind the owl in his basket where he sleeps. And the mouse eat the box to make a nest!" We all enjoyed the many Julia Donaldson books that we shared last term. This week we have been introducing some of the characters that will be appearing in the books that we are going to share this term from our new focus author - Mick Inkpen!
Do you recognise any of the characters? Can you name any of the stories that they appear in?
We then of course went back to our usual 'happy' faces!
As you know, this wasn't quite the 'Happy New Year' that we had all been hoping for, but we will continue to do all we can to try and keep everyone safe and well as we embark on the term ahead - which this week has brought with it some very frosty mornings! After putting our coats on to keep nice and warm, we went for a walk outside to look at the effect of all the frost . . . "When you stand on the grass it's a bit crunchy - the grass is white!" "When you squish the leaves they crunch - when I squish it it's crunching" Luca told us "I've found an icy stick" and when asked how it felt in his hand, he replied "Bumpy, a bit spiky". He then held up a frosty leaf and said "If you put this leaf in the sun it sparkles!" As we looked at the spider webs Imogen told us they were "Frosted" then as we looked at the field she said "There's footprints! Look at the trees, they're frosty". When we looked at the play tyre she told us it was "Shiny and sparkly"! We sang the rhyme 'Here we go round the mulberry bush' and thought about suggestions for different verses as well as writing labels for the different items of clothing that we might wear to keep us nice and warm. Some of the children also had a go at creating a handprint robin to add to our display!
