As you know, we noticed a bird's nest had been built on top of our broom during the previous Bank Holiday weekend, and we have been eagerly watching and waiting - then this week we had some very exciting news for the children - our baby feathered friends have finally arrived! We feel extremely privileged to have had such a wonderful event take place in our very own courtyard - and to have had the opportunity to share this exciting news before the half-term break! Perhaps you could think of some names for our four new little arrivals - give it some thought and let us know!

The Flower Fairies asked us to create them some pretty pathways to follow! We selected from a range of flowers to create different repeating colour sequences - below is just a small selection of some of our designs: Which colours would you use to create your own repeating sequence?
Perhaps you could design a flower pathway for the fairies to follow too! This week we have been busy designing our own flowers using different shapes . . . Can you name all the different shapes that we have used?
How would you describe their different properties? Perhaps you could design your own flower - which shapes would you use? This week we have been having fun with plant pots! We took turns to 'pick a plant pot', counting the number of petals that were coloured in on our flower and identifying the corresponding numeral on the pot. Next we sorted ourselves into the correct order before singing a rhyme about 'five little plant pots sitting on the wall'! We developed our understanding and use of positional vocabulary by identifying where the packet of seeds was in relation to the plant pot each time - i.e. 'inside', 'underneath', 'on top', 'in front' or 'behind' etc. We also had fun rolling the dice and collecting the corresponding number of plant pots to put in the first hoop, before repeating this for the second hoop and comparing how many there were in each group before finding the total.
Which group had 'more' plant pots in? Which group had 'fewer' in? Can you see how many plant pots were left? Inspired by the growth of our plants we have had a focus on sunflowers this week, and started by looking at the work of Van Gogh before creating our own collaborative interpretation . . . A few of the children decided to paint their own individual sunflowers too, here are just a couple of examples: Some children had a go at creating their own sunflower using an activity on the computer . . . We also used the computer to create our own animation of a sunflower growing! Are you growing your own sunflowers at the moment? Post us a comment and let us know! The children have been very excited this week as they have noticed a big change in everything that we are growing . . .
As we read this lovely story, the children enjoyed working out how many pieces of fruit would be left in the basket after each animal had taken one more out! Then as part of our follow-up activities, we explored some of the fruit from Handa's basket . . . We were delighted with all the different descriptive vocabulary that was used, as well as all of the above, other words used were 'bumpy, stripy, wriggly, prickly, squidgy and wobbly'! Which words would you have used to describe each piece of fruit? Have you tasted all of them? The passion fruit and the mango were very popular with the Nursery children! There was a lovely surprise waiting for us when we returned to Nursery following the Bank Holiday weekend . . . A bird had been busy building a nest on top of our broom in the courtyard!
We are hoping that before long there will be some new additions of the feathered variety joining us - we will of course keep you posted with any future news. Thankfully the weather was kind on Friday and we were able to go out onto the school field to dance around our maypole! When comparing the different flowers, between them the children made use of the following size related vocabulary: 'Little, short, shorter, shortest, tiny, small, smaller, smallest, medium, middle-size, big, bigger, biggest, long, longer, longest, tall, taller, tallest, huge' ! We looked carefully at the flowers for some observational art work: During the week we completed some flower-related activities on the computer: We hope the sun shines for everyone on Monday - and that you are all able to enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend - however you choose to celebrate, please stay safe and well!
In this lovely story, Oliver only likes eating chips - until he plays a game with his grandpa. Each day Oliver goes out into the garden in search of the potatoes, but if he finds another vegetable first, he must eat it! We talked about why the children thought it was important to eat lots of vegetables . . . Luna - "It makes you have energy" Harley - "They make you healthy" Ida - "They make you grow into an adult" We thought it would be good to try and grow some of our own vegetables: We have been busy creating our new vegetable garden on our display board too . . . Are you growing any vegetables at the moment? We would love to hear about them! |
