We know that eating lots of fruit and vegetables is good for us, but as a special treat, we made some cookies, just like Grandma had! Before we began baking we made sure that we washed our hands . . "Because they're dirty and they've got germs on them" After measuring out the ingredients we took turns to mix them together . . . "It needs to go into kind of little breadcrumbs!" "After we've made the cookies we're going to put them in the oven" "We need them to bake!" Before they went in the oven, we added some healthy raisins . . . How many would you have added? Our cookies smelled delicious when they were baking - and they tasted good too! During our porridge party last week, we did a survey and found that raisins were the most popular topping. We thought that if Red Riding Hood was going to take Grandma some cookies, they would be healthier if they had raisins on instead of chocolate chips! We took turns to 'pick a card' from Grandma's basket, identified the numeral and then drew the corresponding number of raisins on the cookies! How many raisins can you see altogether? During our focus on Goldilocks and the Three Bears we had explored writing some apology letters from Goldilocks and sent invitations to our teddy bears for our porridge party. This week, we looked at some different styles of writing - we helped Little Red Riding Hood to make a shopping list for some healthy food for Grandma, and then we designed some 'Wanted' posters for the Wolf! Noah said that the Wolf had "A big tongue" and "Big teeth"!
We will certainly be looking out for him in and around the Nursery. What information would you have included on your poster? Post us a comment and let us know! This week we have been sharing another traditional tale, Little Red Riding Hood . . . When we were reading one of the books, Lydia said "I'm not going in that forest!" She then turned to her friend and told her "Don't ever go in that forest" - her friend replied that she would go in with her mummy, and Lydia responded "Don't talk to wolves then!" We all enjoyed joining in with the 'All the better to hear you with', 'All the better to see you with' and of course, 'All the better to eat you with'! Have you got a favourite version of this story? Post us a comment and let us know!
This weekend there will be lots of celebrations for Chinese New Year!
We thought you might like to watch the following video clips to find out more . . . Now you can share in the celebrations . . . And then finish with a story . . . Happy New Year! Congratulations to Jacob and Owen for being awarded our 'Star of the Week' - well done both of you! Having read the great story of 'Who's Been Eating My Porridge?' by Nick Ward, we thought it would be fun to have our own porridge party! The children invited their favourite bears along, and while the porridge was cooling we went for a walk - but kept an eye out for Goldilocks! Thankfully Goldilocks was nowhere to be seen and when we got back we were able to enjoy our porridge! We tried some different healthy fruit toppings and chose which one
was our favourite. What do you like to have on the top of your porridge? Teddy has been enjoying our shape-related activities, and this week we met some of his friends - the 'Shape Bears'! There were a range of 2D shapes in the porridge bowl, and the children took turns to select one and feed it to the matching shaped bear! "Triangle - it's got three sides!" "Mrs Wilson, I'm feeding them!"
Which Shape Bear would be your favourite? Post us a comment and let us know! Congratulations to Bessie and Lilly for being awarded our 'Star of the Week' for last week. Well done both of you! Noah had given us such a great insight into this traditional tale when we had been talking about our Fairytale Forest, that we decided to share some different versions of the story! Bella noticed some bears in one of the illustrations, telling us they were
"Behind the trees, they're hiding from Goldilocks!" Towards the end of the book, she said that Goldilocks 'screamed' - when asked why, Bella replied "Cause she could see the Three Bears!" Prior to reading another version of the story, Alys reminded us what she knew already - "Goldilocks went in Mummy Bear's bed" (What was it like?) "It was too soft!" (So what happened?) "She go out of the Mummy Bear's bed" (What did Goldilocks do next?) "She go in Baby Bear's bed" (I wonder what she thought of that bed?) "She said it was just right!" (Then what happened?) "Goldilocks did sleep in Baby Bear's bed!" Have you got a favourite version of the story? Post us a comment and let us know! We have had a very busy couple of weeks in the Nursery helping Teddy to find out about some different shapes! Madi said that she wanted to tell Teddy about the rectangle - she picked it up and ran her finger along each side in turn as she counted "One side and two sides and three sides and four sides!"
Rosie chose the circle and told Teddy that "It goes round and round!" Which shape would you have chosen? How would you describe it to Teddy? Congratulations to Madi for being awarded our 'Star of the Week' - the first one for 2020 - well done! Our Darwin focus for this half-term is Bouncebackability. We have been exploring the bats, balls, beanbags and balance buckets, and the children have set themselves some challenges . . . "Bounce it . . . ten times!" "Balance it on my head" "Walk with it on my head!" "Throw it . . . really high!" "I want to do something very special . . ." "Do you want to see?" "Walk with them!" "Kick it - real far!" What challenge are you going to set for yourself? Remember, don't give up, keep trying and you will get there in the end! As you know, last term we had Ian Whybrow as our focus author linked to our activities based around 'dinosaurs'. This half-term we are going to have a focus on traditional tales, so will be sharing a range of well-loved stories with the children. We have decided to transform our book corner into a 'Fairytale Forest'! The children have been sharing their current knowledge of traditional tales, this is what Noah told us about Goldilocks and the Three Bears:
"Well, in that story there were three little bears and Goldilocks and Goldilocks ate the bear's porridge!" "And then Goldilocks broke Baby Bear's chair" "And . . . Goldilocks went outside and hid behind a bush, then when the bears came back Baby Bear saw his porridge had gone and his chair had broken!" Have you got a favourite traditional tale? Post us a comment and let us know! On behalf of everyone in the Nursery, we would like to wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year. We look forward to continuing to provide you with an insight into some of our activities as we embark on the start of this new decade! |
