Today the children looked a little different when they arrived at Nursery . . . Thank you for all your wonderful efforts, everyone looked great and we had some fantastic pumpkins too! After enjoying the story of the Gruffalo so much, we decided to create a shelter for the little brown mouse! We went out onto the school field and worked together to collect lots of sticks and leaves to use . . . Afterwards we talked about, and then wrote, a list of instructions: 1. Go outside. 2. Look for some leaves and sticks. 3. Collect them into a pile. 4. Use them to build a shelter. 5. Put the little brown mouse inside! Perhaps you could create a shelter too - remember to listen out for the Gruffalo! After sharing our 'Five Autumn Leaves' number rhyme we went outside to hunt for some very special leaves . . . Once back inside we worked together to sequence them from one to twenty to create our new Autumn leaf number line! We have been thinking about what happens to some of the leaves in the Autumn time . . . We talked about how they change colour and fall from the trees. It was lots of fun mixing colours to create Autumn shades then printing with some of the leaves that we had found on our field!
The Gruffalo found some 'treasures' in the deep dark wood! We have been describing some of them . . .
Alys - "Acorn, it's smooth, it's from a tree, it's brown" She then looked at another 'treasure' - "It's a conker shell, we have loads of conkers! We got some from the tree the other day, down the lane next to our house" Alys went on to describe it - "Spiky . . . it's smooth on the other bit" Perhaps you could go for a walk and collect some of your own autumnal treasures! What words would you use to describe them? Post us a comment and let us know! This week we have been reading another wonderful book from Julia Donaldson . . . Abbie told us that she liked the Gruffalo - "Because he saw the mouse and he had some big sharp claws and he had some big orange eyes and prickles on his back and he had big sharp toes and some knees!" We all thought about who our favourite character was and described what they were like! Marta - "The Gruffalo has sharp claws" As she was drawing her picture, Marta said that she needed purple prickles, orange eyes, a black tongue and a green nose. Poppy said that Mouse was her favourite - "He's got whiskers, he's got a pink tail, he's got big ears!" Luna liked Snake - "He's got some hoops around, a pattern . . . some hoops" After she had finished drawing her picture, Luna said "When the mouse told him about the Gruffalo he slithered away!" Who is your favourite character from the story?
How would you describe them? After we had harvested some of the vegetables from the school vegetable garden, we created some of our own for Harry O'Hay to watch over! How many pumpkins can you see?
Can you count the carrots? How many are there? We all enjoyed the story of 'Oliver's Vegetables' by Vivian French - Oliver was able to try lots of different vegetables that his Grandpa had grown in his garden. Have you grown any vegetables? We would love to hear about them - post us a comment and let us know! This week we have been to visit our school vegetable garden . . . All the vegetables looked very tasty! Which would be your favourite one to eat? We have been having fun learning a new number rhyme about five red apples on the farmer's apple tree!
The children took turns to come and 'pick' an apple from the tree, before locating the corresponding numeral to show how many apples were left - which apple would you have chosen first? This week we have been reading another of our Julia Donaldson books . . . "It's The Scarecrows' Wedding!" Florence - "The cows did the bells and the ducks give the feathers to the Scarecrows. Harry did marry her!"
Emily - "The Scarecrows had a wedding". We talked about some of the items that they had included on their list - "Shells for the necklace, the feathers for the dress, the rings, pink flowers". "The snail leaded the way!" "The snail was too slow! Harry was tired, he had a nap". Emily told us that her favourite part of the story was "The feather dress, because it was so pretty!" We have been creating our own Harry O'Hay to go on one of our display boards! |
