Kente Cloth This week we have had a focus on African Art and we began by sharing the story of 'The Spider Weaver: A Legend of Kente Cloth'. This tells the tale of two weavers from a tiny Ghanaian village who came across a spider creating the most extraordinary patterns with her web. The weavers redesigned their looms so that they could imitate the spider's weaving dance and produce their own designs and patterns that are still worn throughout the world today. The children have been creating some wonderful patterns of their own! As well as individual pieces, we created a collaborative one too . . . Ashanti Gold Discs Early European visitors to the Ashanti royal court of Ghana were astounded by the dazzling display of gold jewellery worn against brilliant fabrics. The traditional Ashanti gold discs, added to necklaces and other jewellery were highly patterned - we had a go at making some from clay and then painting them gold! An African Sunset After looking at some images of beautiful sunsets the children worked together to create one of our own before adding silhouettes to portray an African scene . . . The Lion's Mane! Each group produced their own collaborative lion head, creating patterns on strips of card to form the mane. This was followed by working together on the jungle background! African Necklaces After looking at some traditional bead necklaces with their beautiful colours and patterns, the children created their own African inspired paper plate necklaces . . . We have had lots of fun producing our African art this week - we hope that you
have enjoyed taking a look at our different creations!
